Jesse Urias Lee

Jesse Urias Lee, son of Obadiah Watson Lee and Rebecca Taylor Sullivan, was born January 16, 1833 in Greene County, Illinois and died October 22, 1904 in Gaylord, Smith County, Kansas.  

He married Nancy Jane Mooney on September 20, 1855 in Chesterfield, Macoupin County, Illinois.  See Marriage Certificate

Other events in the life of Jesse Urias Lee

Military:  Jesse enlisted as a private in Company H, Illinois 122nd Infantry on September 4, 1862.  On October 31, 1862 he was transferred to Company D of the 122nd where he served through out the Civil War.  He mustered out of service on July 15, 1865 in Mobile, Alabama.  See Civil War records for Jesse Lee, regimental history and diary of Ibbetson from Company D, Illinois 122. 

Occupations : Farmer in Illinois and later in Deer Creek Township, Phillips County, Kansas from 1871 till 1903.  He served served as postmaster in the Blooming Rose, MO. post office commencing in 1866 till some time before moving to Kansas in 1871. 

Land:  (See locations Macoupin and Phillips Counties).  At age 18, Jesse purchased 40 acres of land in Shipman township (NE1/4 NE1/4 Section 12), Macoupin County on July 12,1851.  On October 3, 1854, he purchased an additional 40 acres of land in Shipman township (On 14 November 1857, Jesse Lee purchased 40 acres of land in Macoupin County, Illinois from his parents.  In 1859, Jesse and brother-in-law Abraham Smith, acquired 40 acres (each) of land grant land in Texas County, MO.  Later that year, Abraham sold his adjacent land to Jesse Lee, who then sold the combined 80 acres to R. Duke the same day.  After returning from the Civil War, Jesse purchased 160 acres of land from Abraham Smith and wife Martha Mooney.  Martha inherited from her father, Jesse Hale Mooney.  Jesse homesteaded 160 acres of Deer Creek Township, Phillips County, KS, land with patent issued in 1880 (see patent record). 

Residences: As an infant, his family moved from Greene county to Macoupin County Illinois where his parents farmed.  He purchased land and farmed in Macoupin County prior to and after his service in the Civil War.  The family moved to Texas County, MO., where his widowed, mother-in-law resided in 1865 or 1866.  In 1871, he and his family moved to Phillips County, Kansas where they homesteaded land and farmed.  In 1900, Jesse and Nancy moved off the farm into Gaylord, Kansas.

Burial : Gaylord Cemetery, Smith County, Kansas.

Nancy Jane Mooney, daughter of Joseph Hale Mooney and Rachel E Diedrick, was born November 18, 1840 in Current Creek, Texas County, Missouri and died February 27, 1923 in Gaylord, Smith County, Kansas.

Joseph Watson Lee was born May 8, 1858 and died on December 1, 1944.  He married Louisa Eliza Hatton on November 25, 1883.

Edward Payton Lee was born on March 9, 1863 in Chesterfield, Macoupin County, Illinois and died April 10, 1941 in Gaylord, Smith County, Kansas.  He married Anna F Franklin on April 10, 1892 in Phillips County, Kansas.

Wilburt "Willie" Lee was born on December 9, 1866 in Missouri and died September 9, 1923.

Charles Mayfield "Charlie" Lee was born on October 10, 1869 in Missouri and died September 5, 1939.  He married Alice Ives Smith.

Milton Lee was born on June 9, 1872 in Phillips County, Kansas and died December 6, 1940 in Gaylord, Smith County, Kansas.

George Taylor Lee was born on February 15, 1877 in Phillips County, Kansas and died January 1973 in Smith Center, Smith County, Kansas.

Emma Louella "Lovella" Lee was born on January 27, 1884 in Kansas and died December 1978 in Hughson, Stanislaus County, California.  She married James Garfield Pitzer on June 13, 1904.
