Greene Origins
The Greene family name is of
English origin. The initial form of the name in England was
De la Grene or Dela Grene. A number of minor barons
bearing the name De la Grene lived in Northamptonshire during
the 12th and 13th centuries. A direct link has been
made to Greene's of Dorsetshire, England as far back as the
early 1500's. According to extensive research by
Major-General George Sears Greene, a highly probable link to the
Greene's of Northhamptonshire has been established.
The ancestors of Dorothy Greene's family lived on an estate in
Bowridge Hill, Gillingham, Dorset. The initial immigrant
to the Americas was John "The Surgeon" Greene in 1635. The
family settled in Rhode Island where the original land and
estate stayed in the family for about 200 years. John
Greene and his descendents were one of the notable families of
colonial Rhode Island. General Nathaniel Greene, the
Revolutionary War hero, was a descendent of John Greene and was
born on the family estate.
Albert Greene moved his family from Rhode Island to Missouri
and then Kansas shortly after the Civil War. His brother
Thomas moved to Kansas also. Albert Greene and his wife
Susan were one of the largest land holders in Phillips County,
Kansas in 1900.
One of the main references for the Greene family before the
1800's is a book by Louise Brownell Clarke documenting the
research of Major-General Greene, The
Greene's of Rhode Island, with historical records of English
ancestry, 1534-1902.
