McGee Origins
The name McGee is from both Scottish and Irish gaelic
origins. The name has many spellings including MacGee,
MacGhee, MacGhie, Magee and earlier variations such as M'Ghie,Macge,
Magy, Makge, M'Gye, M'Gey and Machgie. The Scottish
surname is most common in Ulster. This portion of Ireland
was populated by Scottish and English settlers following the
Nine Years War commencing in the early 1600's. These
settlements, known as the Plantation of Ulster, were
undertaken by the English monarchy to pacify the most gaelic and
difficult to subvert area of Ireland. The gaelic Irish
surname McGee is most common in the counties of Tyrone and
Donegal. These counties are in northwest Ulster. In
the early eighteenth century and continuing until the start of
the American Revolution, large numbers of these Scotch-Irish,
emigrated to America. The ancestors of many McGees immigrated to
America during that period and more arrived during the mid
nineteenth century as they fled the Irish Potato Famine.
It is thought that the David McGee
ancestorial roots are the Scotch-Irish settlers in Ulster that
subsequently immigrated to the United States because of the
protestant religion and supported by a family history related by
Walter McGee. Further research is needed to
establish the family name origin. The country of origin
for several of David McGee ancestors has been established.
These ancestors immigrated to the American Colonies and the
United States from
Germany, England or Ireland. Immigrants are denoted on the
family trees with a flag denoting their country of origin.
